Avoiding Scams
The desire to win big can be a huge motivator. Unfortunately there
are people out there who will take advantage of this desire to lure
you into a fake contest or other scam. It is best to use caution
whenever giving anyone else your personal information, and be wary
of the following common scams:
- The fake email scam
You've received an email stating you've won, but you've never
heard of the contest.
- The fake contest scam
A contest that looks legitimate, but is from an unknown company.
- The fake contest that looks like a real contest
The hardest to spot, these contests look like they are from familiar
companies, but you can find no mention of them on the company's
main website, and the website address doesn't seem quite right.
- The fake phone call scam
You receive a phone call stating you've won but again you've never
heard of the company.
- Fake taxes or shipping charges
You've won a contest, and they'll ship your prize out as soon
as you pre-pay the shipping or taxes.
- Fake mail scam
You receive a bulk mail postcard or letter in the mail stating
you've won a contest and you just need to call the number provided.
